Lesson 8: The Fatḥatān (Double Fathah)

Learn to read Double Fathah (The Fatḥatān). It produces the nasalized '-an' sound. An Alif seat is written after most letters, but is silent. Hamzah and Tā Marbūṭah do not need an Alif.

• Tanwīn Fathatān:Appends the nasalized '-an' sound. The following Alif is a silent support seat.

The Silent Alif Seat

An Alif is written after the Fatḥatān (ً) on most letters (e.g. بًا). This Alif is **completely silent** and acts only as a spelling support seat when reading continuously.

Alif-Seat Exceptions

Tā Marbūṭah (ةً) and Hamzah (ءً) **never** take a silent Alif seat. The Fatḥatān is written directly over them.

Stopping on Fatḥatān (Waqf)

When stopping on a word ending in Fatḥatān, the nasal sound is dropped, and it morphs into a **2-count Alif stretch** (*Madd ‘Iwaḍ*). E.g. أَحَدًا is read as أَحَدَا.
