Lesson 13: The 'I' Elongations (Kasrah / Zayr)

Elongate the Kasrah vowel sound for exactly 2 counts when followed by a Yā Sākinah (Yā Maddah) or when carrying a Standing Kasrah (Khari Zayr).

Rules for this lesson

• Yā Maddah:Prolong for 2 counts when a silent Yā follows a letter with Kasrah.

• Standing Kasrah (Khari Zayr):A vertical stroke below the letter that functions as a shorthand Yā Maddah, prolonging the sound for 2 counts.

Yā Maddah (I-Elongation)

When a silent or Sākin Yā follows a letter with Kasrah (e.g. بِي), prolong the 'I' sound for exactly **2 counts** (equivalent to 1 Alif).

Standing Kasrah / Khari Zayr

A vertical stroke below a letter (e.g. بٖ) that functions exactly like Yā Maddah, elongating the sound for **2 counts**.
