Lesson 14: The 'U' Elongations (Ḍammah / Paysh)

Elongate the Ḍammah vowel sound for exactly 2 counts when followed by a Wāw Sākinah (Wāw Maddah) or when carrying an Inverted Ḍammah (Ulti Pesh).

Rules for this lesson

• Wāw Maddah:Prolong for 2 counts when a silent Wāw follows a letter with Ḍammah.

• Inverted Ḍammah (Ulti Pesh):A hook-like stroke above the letter that functions as a shorthand Wāw Maddah, prolonging the sound for 2 counts.

Wāw Maddah (U-Elongation)

When a silent or Sākin Wāw follows a letter with Ḍammah (e.g. بُو), prolong the 'U' sound for exactly **2 counts** (equivalent to 1 Alif).

Inverted Ḍammah / Ulti Pesh

A hook-like stroke above a letter (e.g. بٗ) that functions exactly like Wāw Maddah, elongating the sound for **2 counts**.

Contrast Practice

Avoid stretching short Ḍammahs. Practice contrast words like لَهُ (Lahu - 1 count each) versus لَهٗ (Lahū - 1-2).
